Overview

The SVS250 is a 250-watt vaporizer designed for wattage control, temperature protection, coil preheat, and custom user controls. It runs on a three-cell lithium polymer battery and features cell-by-cell monitoring with an integrated balance charger.

Each vaporizer can be turned on and off by several different controller devices. Using the USB port and the EScribe software, each session can be customized for the optimal temperature or wattage to produce the best vapor for your mouse or rat experiment. Vaporizers can be custom-set to match your needs with a simple push of a button.

Because wattage, not temperature, controls vapor volume, large vapor volumes can be produced without unnecessarily high temperatures. Each puff has enough vapor to fill a standard cage and can be delivered at your chosen timing intervals.

Temperature protection

The SVS250 directly measures and limits the temperature of the heating coil during operation. Preventing the coil from becoming too hot, regardless of fluid, wicking, or airflow, avoids a variety of undesirable situations. Appropriate temperature settings prevent the wicking material from charring, which can introduce unintended chemicals into the vapor, and reduce the breakdown of drug and base-liquid components that could affect the vapor produced.

Temperature protection requires a heating coil made from Nickel 200 alloy, or another material with a well-defined temperature coefficient of resistance, rather than Nickel Chromium or Kanthal alloys. If the temperature reaches the maximum value, the wattage applied to the atomizer coil is reduced to prevent overheating. The temperature reading is the average temperature of the atomizer coil, so the coil should be constructed for uniform temperature, without hot or cold spots.

In normal operation, the maximum temperature setting is shown on the screen when the device is not firing. While firing, the actual average coil temperature is displayed.

To change the temperature limits

  1. Lock the device by pressing the Fire button five times.
  2. Hold down the MODE button for two seconds.
  3. After two seconds the maximum temperature is displayed; release the MODE button.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to adjust the maximum temperature.
  5. When the desired maximum temperature is shown, press Fire to exit.
The maximum temperature is adjustable between 200°F and 600°F. To disable temperature protection entirely, raise the limit to 600°F, then press UP once more; the limit will read OFF. To switch to Celsius, lower the temperature to 200°F, then press DOWN once more.

Preheat

When the SVS250 is used with a temperature-sensing atomizer, an additional Preheat feature activates. No vapor is produced while the temperature is below the boiling point of the liquid. Preheat applies extra power until the coil reaches operating temperature, shortening the delay between firing and vapor generation. Because preheat is temperature-based, it will not overheat or burn the vapor.

Attaching a new atomizer

The SVS250 uses the resistance of the atomizer to calculate coil temperature, and continually checks whether a new or changed atomizer has been connected. When using temperature protection, only attach atomizers that have cooled to room temperature; attaching a hot atomizer can cause incorrect temperature readings until it cools.

When you connect a new coil, or disconnect and reconnect an existing one, the SVS250 prompts you to confirm the change. On the first fire it displays New Coil? UP YES / DOWN NO. Press UP for a new atomizer, or DOWN if it is the same atomizer reconnected.

Operation

To wake the device from a powered-off state, tap the Fire button or send a signal from the controller. To generate vapor, press Fire, then hold MODE for two to three seconds. The screen displays either power locked hold up or down or power locked hold mode. Use UP or DOWN to scroll through default temperature settings for various drugs. To change wattage, hold MODE again for two to three seconds, then use UP or DOWN to adjust.

Modes

LockedPress Fire five times (under 0.7s between presses) to enter Locked mode. The device will not fire and power will not change accidentally. The screen stays off except to show Locked, Click 5X. Press Fire five times to exit.
StealthWhile locked, hold Fire and Down together for five seconds. The display turns off but still shows error and lock messages. Repeat to return to normal. The setting is stored to flash and survives power loss.
Power LockedHold MODE for two seconds. The device operates normally but the power setting cannot be changed, preventing accidental power changes. Hold MODE for two seconds to exit.
Resistance LockIf the measured resistance drifts, lock it: while locked, hold Fire and Up together for two seconds. The SVS250 then uses the present cold resistance until the atomizer is disconnected or the lock is disabled. A lock symbol replaces the ohm symbol. Repeat to disable.
Max Temperature AdjustFrom locked mode, hold MODE for two seconds. The max temperature is displayed; use UP and DOWN to adjust, then press Fire to save and exit.

Custom profiles

The SVS250 lets you customize and select between eight groups of output settings called Profiles. Six profiles are pre-loaded:

Profile 10.2 Ω resistance coil
Profile 20.5 Ω resistance coil
Profile 3Methamphetamine, 345°F
Profile 4Cannabis, 440°F
Profile 5Cocaine, 370°F
Profile 6Nicotine, 400°F

To switch profiles, enter Power Locked mode by holding MODE for two seconds, then double-click Up or Down to cycle. Press Fire to select the displayed profile. Each profile stores an output power setting, a maximum temperature, and the resistance-lock value for its atomizer. Coil material and preheat settings can also be adjusted per profile in the software.

Coil materials

The coil material for each profile can be changed on the device for any material in the Materials Repository. Press Fire five times to lock, then hold MODE and Fire together for two seconds. Use UP and DOWN to cycle through materials, and press Fire to confirm.

Error messages

Display auto power-down

The screen is at full brightness while firing. After ten seconds with no button presses it dims, and thirty seconds after the last press it fades out and the device sleeps. Press Fire to wake it. Display brightness and timing can be customized in the software.

USB charger

The SVS250 has a built-in 2 A USB charger that automatically detects the type of USB power supply, so it works with standard PC USB ports or higher-power chargers. The maximum charge current is based on the cell capacity programmed in the software.

Cell-by-cell monitoring & balancing

The SVS250 runs from a high-discharge three-cell battery. Because lithium polymer cells can be damaged by excessive discharge, each cell is measured independently and firing stops when any cell reaches the cutoff voltage. The vaporizer uses the battery pack taps to monitor each cell.

During charging it is vital that no cell exceeds 4.2 volts. If one cell has more charge than the others, the SVS250 turns on a balancer to charge it more slowly so the others can catch up. By monitoring and charging each cell individually, the safety of a multi-cell pack matches that of a single cell, the same approach used in power tools, laptops, and electric vehicles.
